The five-year anniversary trip of SBCC Ski and Snowboard delivered another year of unforgettable memories amidst the largest budget cuts Santa Barbara City College has endured during the history of the college. In this economic crisis, SBCC Ski and Snowboard has demonstrated it is alive and flourishing.
Memorable moments from 2010 etch lasting memories in our minds. With the anniversary and the economy, these mental snapshots that tug at our heartstrings seem more powerful than ever. As a staff, we have always felt it's the life lessons and deep friendships that seem to surface above the skills, fun and laughter from the overall experience. Mammoth 2010 had some big moments.
David Fleiger's tragedy turned to triumph after his first day, second run injury set the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Miraculously we were able to obtain a full access media pass to the Snowboarding Olympic Trials for David. While he was healing, he was able to feed his new passion for media and found himself among NBC, Snow Channel and other media moguls, filming and interviewing these Olympic athletes. Our favorite visual was seeing David behind his tiny video camera, in the middle of the media pit, surrounded by the giant cameras from network moguls. Our very own Pat Branch had a birds-eye-view snapping action shots along the half pipe for his photography business.
Matt Burns, on his fourth trip with us, had his best year yet and landed some jumps he had never dreamed possible. With the assistance of Natalie, Matt soared to new levels physically and mentally. His smile told it all.
Abbey Lane, shared her strength of character and commitment as she spent a life-changing anniversary with new friends participating in healthy challenges on the mountain. Her ability to overcome challenges and surface strong, has inspired us all.
Kana fell in love with the black skies and bright stars on Thursday night's snowmobile trip to Rock Creek Lodge. Being an international student, this experience seemed more like a dream as she exclaimed, "I want to move to Mammoth! I have never experienced anything like this and I will never forget this night."
The transformation of Andrew Antone over the last four years seemed nothing less than incredible. One hundred and fifteen pounds less and a current season pass holder, Andrew tackles all the runs on the mountain. It is a great reminder to us all that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and persevere.
As we say good-bye to Mammoth 2010 and look forward to 2011, we thank you all for your friendship and memories. They tug at our heartstrings and find the way to our souls.
